SPECIAL EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY; ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY

July 2021 - June 2023

Provides leadership for all Special Education-related instructional technology for a large diverse urban district with a focus on teacher training and technical assistance.  Serves as liaison with the Technology department and collaborator on ensuring equitable access for all students.  Executes all aspects of iPad initiative for Special Education, manages apps, requests provides training and technical assistance for all staff and student iPads.  Provides technology-based training on Tier 1 UDL supports for Special Education and District-wide tools (i.e. Read & Write, Bookshare).  Develops and delivers professional development for technology-based curriculum and assessment tools (i.e. Unique Learning System, SANDI).  Consults and collaborates with Assistive Technology Team for ongoing support with MTSS model and student specific problem-solving

TEACHER TRAINING; NON PUBLIC SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS WITH AUTISM

August 2021 - June 2023

Provides teacher training and Special Education coaching support for new Non-Public School.  Leads professional development for Unique Learning System curriculum for teachers through both school-wide trainings and individual coaching support sessions.  Serves as Assistive Technology specialist for students and teams remotely.

DECOSTE WRITING PROTOCOL

August 2021- present

Providing related trainings and webinars on the DeCoste Writing Protocol (DWP): A short course on writing!  Endorsed by Denise DeCoste.

The DWP encompasses:

1 -  Writing perspectives, development, and summarized research on composition, spelling, handwriting, and keyboarding. 

 

2 - Protocol for assessing written productivity of struggling writers.

3 - Research-based instructional strategies linked to handwriting, keyboarding, spelling, composition, and technology accommodations.

JOY ZABALA FELLOWSHIP IN ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY (AT) AND ACCESSIBLE EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS (AEM) MENTOR

August 2022 - June 2023

Serve as mentor to emerging practitioner mentee. Developed proposal for executing over the current school year for capacity building and systems change for mentee's school district in relation to Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Assistive Technology (AT).  


The Joy Zabala Fellowship in Assistive Technology and Accessible Educational Materials celebrates the life and work of Joy Smiley Zabala, EdD, who had a substantial impact in her 40+ year career in promoting inclusion for learners with disabilities in K-12, postsecondary, and workforce settings.
